Former U.S. defense secretary Austin said the U.S. Navy can reopen the Strait of Hormuz, but sustaining long-term openness would be costly and require allied participation.

Ahead of planned Q2–Q3 overt and covert inspections, Beijing hosted a June 8 meeting of leaders from the central safety-production assessment and inspection teams. Teams were ordered to conduct on-site, in-depth checks and to refer identified major accident hazards in key sectors — mining, chemicals, fireworks, construction, firefighting, industry and trade, and special equipment — to provincial party and government authorities. Provinces are to be urged to verify rectifications, trace responsibility and impose strict sanctions. The meeting also mandated special inspections of regulatory enforcement, combining inspection with remediation, and strict action against illegal safety practices, falsification and corruption in the safety sector.
