Japan is proposing remote Minamitori Island as a potential nuclear waste site, a
key step in restarting atomic power. The local administration is expected to
approve a preliminary study requested by the trade ministry, according to
Nikkei. The study would take about two years, while full site selection could
take up to two decades. After shutting reactors following the 2011 Fukushima
disaster, Japan is returning to nuclear to cut fossil fuel reliance, though
waste storage remains highly sensitive.
