The U.S. blockade has officially gone into effect, according to a senior U.S.
official, with more than 15 U.S. warships deployed in the Middle East to support
the operation. The naval assets include an aircraft carrier, guided-missile
destroyers, an amphibious assault ship, and additional vessels. According to
Navy and Central Command officials, the ships have capabilities including
helicopter-based boarding operations and directing commercial vessels to
designated areas for inspection or containment. Officials said the ships would
likely operate outside the Strait of Hormuz. Retired Navy Vice Adm. Kevin
Donegan said: “Don’t expect it all to be started at once, this will build.
Blockades take time to have an impact.”
