OpenAI’s $852bn valuation is facing growing scrutiny from investors as the
company shifts strategy toward enterprise AI while competing with Anthropic and
Google. Some backers question its focus ahead of a potential IPO, arguing it is
stretched between consumer ChatGPT dominance and enterprise tools. OpenAI
recently raised $122bn in an oversubscribed round backed by SoftBank, Amazon,
Nvidia, a16z and Sequoia. Anthropic’s annualised revenue rose from $9bn to
$30bn, ahead of OpenAI’s $25bn, though accounting methods are disputed, with
OpenAI rejecting claims of inflated figures. The company is reallocating compute
toward enterprise coding products such as Codex, expanding infrastructure to 8GW
secured with a 30GW target, while cutting select projects like Sora and
expanding headcount to 8,000.
