At a May 29 regular briefing, Zhang Yujun, director-general of the Department of
Natural Ecological Protection at the Ministry of Ecology and Environment, said a
recent surge in wild boars entering cities, wolves predating sheep and isolated
bear and tiger attacks stems from habitat fragmentation, incomplete food chains,
local population imbalances and overlapping human-animal living space. The
ministry outlined four responses: strengthen protection and proactive
prevention; implement scientific monitoring and targeted measures; improve
mechanisms and tighten responsibility enforcement; and完善 the compensation system
to safeguard basic livelihoods.
