President Trump on May 31 reposted media reports on Truth Social about a former
CIA officer allegedly hoarding gold and wrote, "Now is the time for a physical
audit of Fort Knox." Authorities identified the suspect as 49-year-old David
Rush, a 17-year CIA veteran who worked in the Directorate of Science and
Technology; court papers say he was arrested May 18 and charged with theft of
public funds. FBI documents cited by NBC say agents recovered about 303 gold
bars (roughly $40m), about $2m in cash and 35 luxury watches from Rush's home.
Trump has repeatedly called for audits of Fort Knox and in early May said he
wanted to personally verify whether the gold reserves remain intact, adding he
suspected unspecified thefts.
