Dalian University of Technology’s School of Mechanical Engineering team used an internationally first “ultra-low temperature forming” process to mass-produce integrated propellant-tank bottoms over 2 m in diameter, shortening manufacturing cycles by more than 90%. The metal panels are 4 mm thick with a smooth finish; despite their thinness they must withstand launch vibration, shock and support hundreds of tonnes of propellant. The university says the breakthrough could lower costs and raise launch cadence efficiency for commercial space operators.
