The USDA says a suspected New World screwworm case was detected in southern
Texas and a sample has been sent to an Iowa lab for confirmation. If confirmed,
it would be the first US detection since a 2016 Florida deer case that was
eradicated by early 2017. The agency noted the US cattle herd is at a 75-year
low. Confirmation would likely trigger cattle movement restrictions and could
disrupt meatpackers’ operations.
