CNN, citing multiple unnamed sources, reported on June 5 that Israel had
established bases in several countries around Iran to support operations against
Tehran. The report says Israel and the US secretly established multiple sites in
Azerbaijan weeks before the Feb. 28 strike on Iran; the closest site was about
90 km from Iran’s northwestern city of Tabriz. Dozens of Israeli personnel —
special forces, heliborne units and intelligence staff — were deployed to
collect Iranian military intelligence, conduct search-and-rescue for downed
aircrew and provide early warning for missile launches.
