British Airways CEO Sean Doyle said at the IATA annual meeting in Rio that
sustained high jet-fuel prices would force ticket-price increases. Jet fuel has
roughly doubled since February after the Iran war; the Strait of Hormuz remains
closed despite ceasefire talks and handles about 40% of Europe’s jet-fuel
supply. Global carriers have begun raising fares: Virgin Atlantic has added
surcharges of £50 to economy, £180 to premium and £360 to top cabins. BA warned
last month it would raise fares, notably in business class, to offset higher
fuel costs.
