Two U.S. officials said on June 11 local time a lockdown and evacuations at the
Pentagon were caused by a false alarm. Earlier multiple sources and the local
fire department had reported a "hazardous-materials incident" that prompted
floor and corridor lockdowns and partial evacuations. A Pentagon spokesperson
said building sensors detected an air-quality anomaly, prompting precautionary
"shelter-in-place" orders for affected areas; an emergency response team is on
site to investigate and support personnel.
