June 15 — Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian, at a regular briefing,
rejected a Lowy Institute report that said China’s hypersonic weapons buildup
increases its ability to strike Australia. Lin said he had noted the report and
reiterated that China pursues peaceful development; its military expansion is
aimed at defending national sovereignty, security and development interests, is
not directed at any country, and represents growth in forces that favor peace.
He called the report’s “strong-nation-must-dominate” logic a serious strategic
misjudgment and urged the institution to stop hyping a so‑called China threat
and to view China’s development objectively and rationally.
