European Parliament plenary in Strasbourg on June 16 voted to approve
legislation implementing the EU-US trade agreement; the text will be submitted
to the EU Council for approval. Parliament and EU Council negotiators agreed on
May 20 to grant preferential tariff treatment for US exports to the EU while
bolstering safeguard mechanisms to protect the EU and its member states. Trump
had warned he would sharply raise US tariffs on EU exports if the EU had not
implemented the deal by July 4.
