The International Maritime Organization said on June 26 that preliminary counts
show roughly 2,500 seafarers from 115 vessels have been evacuated from the
Strait of Hormuz since it launched a crew-evacuation plan on June 23. The plan
recommended two corridors — a northern route on Iran’s side and a southern route
on Oman’s side — but the IMO suspended the evacuation after a vessel was
attacked in the Gulf of Oman on June 25; AIS data show some commercial ships
continued transiting the strait after the suspension.
