About 40 large wildfires are currently uncontrolled across the United States,
concentrated in the US West. Colorado’s Aspen Acres fire is the most severe: as
of July 3 it had burned about 297 sq km, destroyed more than 160 structures,
forced thousands to evacuate and is reported fully out of control. The fire
ignited southwest of Denver and, driven by persistent drought and strong winds,
has spread into Pueblo and Custer counties. The NWS has issued red-flag warnings
for large areas of the western US.
