South Korea is weighing an extension of a 3 trillion won government GPU procurement program aimed at expanding national AI infrastructure. The Science and ICT Ministry (MSIT) is assessing major domestic cloud providers’ capacity to deploy additional GPUs to extend the government’s AI computing resource utilization plan. Under the program, public funds buy GPUs which are installed in CSP-operated data centers and made available to industry, academia and research institutions. After roughly 1 trillion won last year and 2 trillion won this year, the scheme has secured more than 20,000 GPUs and was due to end this year. Officials cite a sharp rise in demand for high-end GPUs, including NVIDIA’s next‑gen Vera Rubin platform, and a priority to develop sovereign AI models as reasons to continue support.
