July 21 — Foreign Ministry spokesman Lin Jian said at a regular briefing that China rejects Japan’s diplomatic protest alleging Chinese warships carried out live-fire training inside Japan’s claimed exclusive economic zone. Lin said China’s relevant authorities have explained positions on recent China‑Russia joint exercises and maritime patrols, and argued that under UNCLOS Okinotorishima is a rock not an island and cannot generate an EEZ or continental shelf, making Japan’s claim unlawful. He added China’s activities were on the high seas and in accordance with international law and practice.
