Syria's president says the government has taken precautionary measures to counter any potential threats from armed groups in areas bordering Iraq.

Iraq will sign an agreement with Syria to build a pipeline linking domestic oilfields to the Mediterranean for crude exports, an official statement said. The cabinet authorised the Basra Oil Company general manager to sign a memorandum of understanding with Syria’s Ministry of Oil on the project. It also instructed the oil minister to sign an MoU with a ConocoPhillips–TI Capital–Novaterra consortium to start exploration and development assessments of the Akkas oil and gas field and surrounding areas.
