UN Secretary-General Guterres arrived in Cyprus on the evening of the 27th and
began mediation on the 28th to push for a restart of long-stalled Cyprus talks.
He pledged UN support for both Greek and Turkish Cypriot communities and said
the UN cannot impose peace; any settlement must be achieved by Cypriots and
their leaders. Guterres will press parties to agree to a UN-hosted five‑party
conference including Greek and Turkish Cypriot leaders, the three guarantor
states — the UK, Greece and Turkey — and an EU representative, Cyprus state
broadcaster reported.
