A spring 2026 report from the world's largest open-source AI model platform shows Chinese-developed open-source models accounted for 41% of global downloads and that the top six models on global model-calling rankings were all from Chinese teams. Over the past 12 months domestic models occupied the global open-source scale ceiling for nine months and led iteration pace. China holds about 60% of global AI patents; the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology estimates China's core AI industry will exceed 1.2 trillion yuan in 2025 and include over 6,200 firms. The report says a maturing open-source ecosystem will further embed AI into the real economy, supporting new industrialization and higher-quality digital economic growth.

South Korea’s KOSPI tumbled for a second straight day after SK Hynix’s Q2 results missed expectations, extending a sell-off in chip makers as retail investors cut holdings. The KOSPI fell 10% on Tuesday and slid a further 8% on Wednesday, leaving it down more than 30% month-to-date in July and on track for a record monthly decline. SK Hynix dropped 14% on Tuesday and a further 12% on Wednesday, wiping out roughly one-fifth of its market value over two sessions. Investors are now awaiting Thursday earnings from Samsung Electronics and major U.S. tech firms.
