Trump canceled planned strikes on Iran after requests from Iran and other Middle Eastern states, CNN reported; sources said Saudi Crown Prince phoned Trump to express concern. Military analyst and former USAF colonel Cedric Leighton said both Saudi Arabia and Iran have incentives to avoid escalation: disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz have imposed economic strain on Saudi Arabia, and Riyadh’s diplomatic engagement likely contributed to Trump’s pause. Leighton added that after five months of conflict Iran faces economic and military pressure, and any diplomatic pressure from Tehran may reflect an effort to buy time to preserve itself.

Palestinian civil defense spokesman Mahmoud Bassal said in a video statement on the 2nd that Israeli drones and airstrikes struck multiple locations across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 18 people, including two women and four children. Bassal said targets included residential apartments, tents sheltering displaced people, civilian vehicles and gatherings. He said an Israeli drone fired two missiles at a civilian vehicle in Gaza City in the evening, killing four; an airstrike on a tent in west Gaza City killed two, including a 13-year-old, and wounded eight. Earlier, an airstrike on a jeep in central Deir al-Balah killed two, and a strike near Jabalia refugee camp in the north killed one and wounded several.
