The U.S. goods and services trade deficit narrowed 5.6% in June to $73.3 bln, the Commerce Department said Tuesday, as imports fell 1.8% and exports fell 0.9%. Trade data show net exports continued to drag on economic growth this quarter. Recent volatility in trade flows reflects shifting tariff policy, supply‑chain disruption from the Middle East war and large corporate investment in AI. The Supreme Court struck down many Trump‑era import tariffs in Q1, though the administration is pursuing other ways to impose duties. From 2025 into early this year AI spending drove a surge in imports of computers, peripherals and related parts; the June report shows imports of computers and semiconductors slowed, and broader capital‑goods imports including related equipment fell for the first time since September last year.
