SpaceX plans on-site generation and storage for Terafab, the large semiconductor
plant it is developing with Tesla in Texas. Riley Trettel, head of SpaceX energy
and data center development, said in Grimes County on Wednesday the company will
be self-sufficient, building a gas-fired power plant and very large battery
arrays to store energy. Company officials tied the move to surging power needs
from the new fab and associated data centers, boosting demand for new gas
generation; the plan is consistent with Musk’s long-standing preference for
vertical integration. Tesla already manufactures grid-scale Megapack batteries
and operates a Megapack factory west of Houston.
