A fresh heatwave will sweep drought-hit Europe this week, raising wildfire risk,
threatening crops and further depleting already record-low river levels.
France’s weather service expects a high-pressure heat dome to push northern
France toward 40°C on Tuesday; southern UK around 35°C; Frankfurt may reach 38°C
on Friday. The heat could block moisture-bearing clouds and hinder replenishment
of major waterways — the Rhine, Po and Danube — whose low flows have already
disrupted navigation and power generation. Higher temperatures and continued
dryness are adding stress to grids, cutting hydropower output and suppressing
agricultural yields; EU Joint Research Centre models show elevated fire risk
this week across the UK, Spain, France, Germany and Italy.
