President Trump extended the Jones Act waiver allowing foreign vessels to move
oil and other goods in U.S. waters for 90 days, but narrowed the exemption to
energy cargoes after Iran-related disruptions to crude flows pushed fuel costs
higher. The new waiver targets gasoline, jet fuel, crude, napatha, LNG, soybean
oil and fertilizer. The Pentagon must consult the U.S. Maritime Administration
before approving waivers for individual voyages. The White House said the move
secures supplies for the military and key industries and increases domestic
transport of gasoline, diesel and jet fuel; U.S. shipbuilders and some members
of Congress say the waiver weakens protections for the domestic shipping
industry.
