South Sudan Health Minister Luke Thompson Toan said on Aug. 12 the health
ministry has recorded 1,721 cholera deaths and 110,574 confirmed cases since
Sept. 2025. The outbreak has reached nine states, 55 counties and three
administrative areas and is the largest cholera outbreak in South Sudan’s
history. The ministry, alongside the National Public Health Institute, WHO and
partners, has launched oral cholera vaccination campaigns and stepped up water,
sanitation and hygiene measures; reported case numbers have declined recently.
