Bill Gates, founder of TerraPower, held meetings on the 14th with SK Group and
HD Hyundai leaders to discuss cooperation on small modular reactors (SMRs) and
power supply for AI data centers. In talks with SK’s chairman he focused on
addressing rising electricity demand from AI data centers, next‑generation
nuclear industry development and potential U.S.-Korea nuclear cooperation. SK
and SK Innovation jointly invested $250m in TerraPower in 2022 and are
TerraPower’s second-largest shareholders; SK Innovation on the same day signed a
cooperation deal with TerraPower on a sodium‑cooled SMR. Gates also met HD
Hyundai’s chairman and the CEO of Hyundai Engineering to review progress on
previously signed commercial agreements; in May the three firms agreed to
jointly commercialize sodium‑cooled SMRs and establish a division of labor.
