The Lebanese presidency said the president welcomed parliament’s initiative and
petitions urging an extension of international forces’ deployment in southern
Lebanon. The presidency said its preferred option is to extend UNIFIL’s mandate;
if that cannot be secured, its fallback is to adopt, within the necessary legal
framework, measures to ensure the international force remains stationed in the
south.
