On Aug. 16 Iran’s armed forces chief Hatami warned that U.S. President Trump’s recent claim that Washington would declare the Strait of Hormuz U.S. territory after “defeating Iran” would be “a huge mistake,” even if uttered as a joke. Hatami added: “This is Iran — the defenders will break the invaders’ legs.”

CIBC capital markets economist Andrew Grantham said the Bank of Canada is unlikely to rush to re-evaluate policy after July CPI accelerated to 3.0%, slightly above forecasts, driven by energy and World Cup-related travel costs. Core inflation excluding volatile items remained around 2%, and inflation excluding gasoline held at 2.2%. Grantham said the BoC has ample time to assess the impact of energy prices and US-Canada trade tensions before adjusting rates; the next decision is Sept. 2.
