U.S. federal debt is projected to reach $40 tln in August 2026, several months sooner than the CBO had forecast. Debt growth has accelerated since the global financial crisis and the COVID stimulus era; milestones include $10 tln (2008), $20 tln (2017) and $30 tln (Jan 2022). Drivers cited: crisis-related fiscal stimulus, revenue shortfalls tied to tariff policies and returned tariffs (one estimate of ~$200 bln), a 2025 Republican-led "Big and Beautiful" fiscal bill estimated at about $2 tln over five years, and a rising-interest-cost feedback loop as higher refinancing costs push debt-servicing needs higher. Market-relevant forecasts: Bank of America says U.S. debt could top $50 tln by July 2029 unless 5-year yields fall below 3.25%; if rates hold, annual interest costs could rise to $1.7 tln by Nov 2028. The Kobeissi Letter reports record interest outlays of $1.4 tln over the past 12 months and projects interest could become the single largest federal outlay by 2028. JP Morgan warns that, at current issuance rates through FY2027, short-term Treasury bills could comprise nearly 25% of debt—raising sensitivity to short-end rate moves.
