On the 22nd, Israeli defense minister Katz said intercepted IDF intelligence
indicated Turkey intended to conduct activities at Syria’s Abu al-Duhur airbase
that would jeopardize Israel’s national security. The IDF had repeatedly
recommended striking the site; after consultations with military and security
officials Katz and Prime Minister Netanyahu first issued direct warnings to
senior Syrian officials and shared the intelligence with US counterparts as a
deterrent. When Syria did not heed the warnings, Katz and Netanyahu authorized
an airstrike on the base. Turkey has not responded.
