ING rates strategist Benjamin Schroeder said the US Treasury’s expansion of liquidity operations to suppress bond yields has instead focused markets on a deeper issue: a rising US debt burden and limited ability or willingness to rein in the fiscal deficit. He noted officials signaled some waste-cutting measures due in the coming days, but warned that if Congress does not undertake major rethinking, any reductions are likely to be marginal.
