Vietnam's National Assembly on Monday approved an agreement tied to the country's first nuclear power project, the most significant step in its nuclear revival since two reactors were cancelled in 2016 over cost concerns. The decision accompanies a revised eighth power development plan that raises national installed capacity to 183.3–236.4 GW by 2030 from 82.4 GW at end‑2024; nuclear is scheduled to contribute 4–6.4 GW between 2030 and 2035. Vietnam also targets at least 10% annual economic growth from 2026 and is pushing investment in manufacturing, AI, semiconductors and data centres, sectors that will materially raise electricity demand.
