Prime Minister Carney said Canada will impose reciprocal 50% tariffs on a range of U.S. imports, doubling existing retaliatory duties on U.S. steel and aluminum to 50% and extending 50% levies to furniture, apparel, video-game consoles, smartphones and other electronics. The measures will target about $20 billion of U.S. goods—roughly 6% of Canada’s imports from the U.S. last year—and approximately match the value of tariffs the U.S. announced under a rarely used 1930 Tariff Act provision. Ottawa also announced support programs for firms affected by the trade escalation.
