Prime Minister Carney said Canada will impose reciprocal 50% tariffs on a range of U.S. imports, doubling existing retaliatory duties on U.S. steel and aluminum to 50% and extending 50% levies to furniture, apparel, video-game consoles, smartphones and other electronics. The measures will target about $20 billion of U.S. goods—roughly 6% of Canada’s imports from the U.S. last year—and approximately match the value of tariffs the U.S. announced under a rarely used 1930 Tariff Act provision. Ottawa also announced support programs for firms affected by the trade escalation.

Canada's minister for Canada–U.S. trade, LeBlanc, said he wants the best possible relationship with all U.S. trade partners and aims to secure an optimal U.S. trade agreement, particularly on autos.
