Foreign investors' net sales of Japanese equities rose to the largest in nearly two months in the week to Aug. 22, Japan's Ministry of Finance said, as rising global bond yields tied to debt and inflation worries pressured tech and other growth stocks. Net sales of Japanese shares totaled JPY 764.1 bln ($4.8 bln), the biggest weekly outflow since the week to June 27. Long-term borrowing costs in the US, Europe and Japan climbed to multi-decade highs last week. After two consecutive weeks of net selling, foreigners turned to net buying of Japanese government bonds, purchasing JPY 435.2 bln of JGBs. Short-term treasury bills saw a second straight week of net outflows, with net sales of JPY 2.07 tln. Japanese investors also net sold JPY 869.0 bln of foreign equities, the largest outflow since the week to June 6.

UK energy regulator Ofgem said the government's decision to abolish VAT on all household electricity bills has been incorporated in this update.
