Lu Kang, deputy head of the International Liaison Department of the CPC Central
Committee, met a delegation of young Japanese lawmakers led by Shinichi Isa in
Beijing on Aug. 27. Lu said Sino-Japanese relations are in serious difficulty,
identifying history and Taiwan as core issues that undercut the political
foundation and bilateral trust. He urged Japanese parties and politicians to
adhere to the four China-Japan political documents and to handle Taiwan in
accordance with the One-China principle, and reiterated Chinese positions on
questions raised by the delegation. Isa said Japan regards bilateral ties as
important, is concerned about the current deterioration, and seeks continued
communication to help improve relations.
