Germany's digital minister Karsten Wilderberg said surging AI demand is tightening compute supply and that the government plans to quadruple compute capacity by the end of the decade and double data centre capacity to about 6 GW by 2030. He said Berlin will seek to speed up data-centre permitting. Wilderberg, who has driven digital policy since Chancellor Merz established a dedicated tech unit, framed the push as part of bolstering European digital sovereignty; by contrast, estimates put US data-centre capacity near 118 GW by 2030.
