Sources said Anthropic discussed buying AI-chip startup MatX for about $7
billion to accelerate custom-hardware development for its rapidly growing AI
business. Talks later shifted toward a partnership, the sources added. One
source said MatX is seeking a new funding round valuing the company near $4
billion. Discussions indicate Anthropic may target chips for model training,
while other chip startups and rival OpenAI are developing processors optimized
for inference; sources said Anthropic could also opt to build inference chips.
