The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, reports Chevron is nearing a deal to expand its long-term operations in Venezuela and could add two heavy-oil fields to its Venezuelan asset portfolio.

Allianz chief economic adviser Mohamed El-Erian called the Fed chair’s first Jackson Hole speech “clear and forceful,” saying it met elevated market expectations despite wide pre-speech divergence. El-Erian said the chair directly addressed calls to set out his view of the current economy, assess the risk balance across the Fed’s dual mandate and reaffirm commitment to the inflation target — items likely to drive media focus. Crucially, the chair argued forward guidance had “exceeded its remit” and warned of a “hall of mirrors” risk, and flagged long-run structural constraints on economic and policy effectiveness, including describing AI as a “new factor of production” that raises “many research questions.” El-Erian added that while those structural themes may attract less immediate media attention, they are the most interesting and potentially influential elements of the speech.
