At 11:20 local time on Aug. 29 Nigerien defence ministry said on state
television the situation is under control and urged residents to carry on with
normal life. Niamey experienced heavy gunfire from the early hours on Aug. 29
after sources said a mutiny was launched by younger officers in the armed
forces. Rebel units converged on the capital from Tillaberi and Dosso, attacking
the presidential palace, Diori Hamani International Airport and state
television; national TV was briefly taken off air.
