Israeli defense minister KATZ said on Sept. 1 a senior Hamas member was recently
arrested in Gaza City; he provided no further details. KATZ said Israel will
continue to pursue Hamas and destroy its infrastructure and will not withdraw
from the Gaza Strip until Gaza is demilitarized and Hamas is disarmed. Israeli
sources said an Israeli-backed Palestinian militia, supported by Israeli air
force strikes, carried out a raid on Gaza City the same day. Palestinian sources
said Israeli strikes on Gaza City killed three people, including a woman and a
child, and wounded several.
