US Treasury Secretary BESSENT said non-market economies are siphoning growth from other economies.

Leningrad governor Aleksandr Drozdenko said early on Sept 1 a Ukrainian drone attack damaged Ust-Luga port on the Baltic Sea and caused a fire; emergency services are on site. He later said the region's airspace danger warning was lifted and that 52 Ukrainian drones were shot down during the wave of attacks. Ust-Luga is reported to be the Baltic region's largest port and Russia's second-largest; it handled about 32.9 mln tonnes of refined oil exports in 2025, nearly one-third of Russia's refined oil exports.

Poland increased defense purchases from domestic firms and Central European joint ventures from about 8.0 bln zloty in 2022 to 30.4 bln zloty in 2025, nearly fourfold. Core defense spending is projected at 53.0 bln euros in 2026, roughly 4.7% of GDP, and active and related military personnel exceed 220,000. Arms orders are shifting from long-distance imports to onshore and Central European near‑shore production, while large-scale equipment deliveries are widening fiscal deficits; Poland expects a 2027 deficit of about 7.1% of GDP.
