Business Insider reported Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg told President Trump last
month he opposed plans for a national AI regulator. Sources said Trump phoned
Zuckerberg the week of Aug. 17 to discuss a White House consideration of a
FINRA-style independent body, a proposal from DeepMind CEO Demis Hassabis to
subject advanced AI models to review and risk testing. Zuckerberg said any
regulator should reflect the Trump administration’s relatively permissive
approach to AI oversight but did not press Trump to change course. The White
House said it is weighing the plan while seeking to balance AI innovation and
safety and is also evaluating an industry-led self-regulatory option. Zuckerberg
has warned that overly strict rules could slow model releases and harm U.S.
competitiveness in AI.
