The WMO said on Sept 3 that an El Niño event has been confirmed and is expected
to intensify into a very strong (super) El Niño within months. China experienced
widespread, high-intensity summer rainfall in the east and above-normal typhoon
frequency and strength; the China National Climate Center expects El Niño-driven
impacts to persist through autumn and winter toward a peak, with next summer
likely to be particularly affected.
