The European Commission will invest €200m (about $232m) in Greenland to develop critical minerals, renewable energy and satellite communications, EU Commission President von der Leyen announced in Nuuk. The funding is intended to deepen ties with Denmark’s semi‑autonomous territory amid rising geopolitical competition as Greenland’s ice melt opens new shipping routes. The announcement follows heightened US interest in the island after President Trump said Greenland should belong to the United States. The EU will publish a new Arctic strategy on Oct. 20 that will redefine the area as the 'northern neighbourhood' rather than the 'High North'.
