CHINA said Japan must sever ties with militarism and take concrete actions to
win the trust of Asian neighbors and the international community. The foreign
ministry said correct handling of history is a test of Japan’s commitment to
peaceful development, noting Japan joined the UN on the premise of acknowledging
militarist crimes and accepting the UN Charter. It added the UN Charter’s ‘enemy
state’ clauses, a wartime-era arrangement targeting WWII defeated states, remain
in force and that Japan should heed the 80th anniversary of the Tokyo trials.
The remarks responded to recent Japanese requests to Russia to remove a monument
commemorating the defeat of Japanese militarism and comments dismissing the
Charter’s enemy-state provisions as obsolete.
