The Baltic Dry Index (BDI) fell 53 points, or 1.4%, to 3,575, ending a three-day rise as Cape and Panamax freight rates weakened. The Capesize index (BCI) dropped 141 points, or 2.2%, to 6,286; Capesize daily earnings fell $1,283 to $53,508. The Panamax index (BPI) slipped 17 points, or 0.7%, to 2,431; Panamax daily earnings fell $157 to $21,878. The Supramax index (BSI) ticked up 7 points, or 0.4%, to 1,682, and the Handysize index (BHSI) rose 6 points to 906.

On the 7th N. Korea's defense minister warned that if the US and its allies attempt a new military confrontation, N. Korea will take strong countermeasures. He said the US, Japan and South Korea are again conducting what he called provocative "Freedom's Blade" drills, and that the US is seeking to rope in Japan and Australia for an unusually large "Eastern Shield" exercise from Sept. 8-24. He added the US–Japan–South Korea security triangle is increasingly an offensive entity and that continued US-led war rehearsals are pushing regional instability toward the limit; N. Korea will respond with firmer, more resolute action if necessary.
