Colombian President De la Espriella met US Secretary of State Rubio in
Barranquilla on the 8th and said Colombia and the United States will deepen
cooperation on regional security, counternarcotics, border management and
investment development. Senator Ivan Cepeda posted opposition to Rubio’s visit
on social media, questioning parts of any security or military arrangements with
the US as potential infringements on national sovereignty and criticizing the
nearly 50‑year US‑led ‘war on drugs’ as having failed to solve the drug problem.
