South Korea is set to announce a U.S. energy investment package worth more than $100 billion to support American AI infrastructure, the Wall Street Journal reports. The plan would finance up to eight nuclear reactors and one natural gas project in the U.S., and stems from last year’s Washington-Seoul trade deal. Under that deal tariffs were cut from 25% to 15% on many goods including autos, and Seoul had pledged $350 billion in U.S. investment plus an additional $100 billion in U.S. energy purchases. No projects had been implemented under the earlier pledge, prompting U.S. frustration; Trump threatened in January to raise tariffs again. Negotiations are nearing agreement on two pacts and an announcement could come as early as next week, though details and timing remain subject to change.
